Chapter thirteen

Are You Doing That?

The dimly lit chamber is adorned with intricate tapestries that sway gently in the cool breeze flowing through the open windows.

Adelaide stands by the window, her silhouette an angelic figure against the moonlit night.

The door creaks as Lucia opens the door wider, damp from the bath and weary, and cautiously steps into the room. Adelaide’s eyes flicker to her immediately.

Without a word, Lucia rushes toward the vampire, tears streaming down her cheeks. Clean and clear-headed, she is finally able to let her emotions run free, and her guard drops. Adelaide’s stoic facade crumbles when she meets Lucia’s embrace.

Lucia clings to Adelaide as if she might disappear at any moment. Adelaide, overwhelmed with emotion and looking relieved, holds Lucia close, her fingers gently weaving through her hair, which has now been somewhat combed.

“I’m so scared, Adelaide. I don’t know what I’m doing,” Lucia whispers, her face buried in short, blonde hair.

Adelaide strokes Lucia’s head, her touch warm and comforting. “Shhh, you’re safe now. I’m here. I’ll always be here.”

Lucia looks up at Adelaide, her eyes searching for reassurance. Adelaide’s gaze is intense, filled with an unspoken promise. Lucia allows everything to spill out—all of the stress and fear that have plagued her this last month—now that they are truly alone.

“I was so scared,” Lucia admits. “I thought I’d never see you again.”

“I guess the world must be fair after all,” Adelaide whispers.

Lucia crumbles when those words fall from Adelaide’s lips. “My—my mother.”

“I know. I’m so sorry, Lucia. I know how much you love her. But she will be okay, I promise. We’ll find her.”

Adelaide leans in, capturing Lucia’s lips in a passionate and desperate kiss. The moment is electric, a culmination of longing and relief.

As they part, Adelaide gently cups Lucia’s face in her hands, their foreheads touching, and their breaths intermingling. “I’ll never let anything harm you again. I swear it.”

Lucia nods, her heart overflowing with love for the vampire who risked everything to keep her safe. At this moment, within the safety of Adelaide’s embrace, Lucia feels a sense of peace she thought she might never experience again.

“And I you,” she whispers. “I promise I will protect you too.”

The room is filled with calmness, two souls are finally reunited. The moonlight bathes them in its soft glow as they hold each other, finding solace in the strength of their bond.

Lucia relaxes, pushing aside her earlier concerns, which were washed away in the shower and down the drain, and she allows Adelaide to lay her back on the soft sheets.

She is struck, as the vampire begins to slowly peel off her robe and undo the sash, that she is in her love’s bedroom for the first time. The place she grew up and calls home is so unlike the temporary sanctuary of Eirini.

The room is draped in a luxurious mix of deep red and sleek black. The atmosphere oozes strength and femininity, and the air is filled with the subtle fragrance of vanilla.

Lucia traces her fingers
